The Paper Mill

James Cropper Speciality Papers has been making some of the world’s finest papers and boards since 1845. Located in the English Lake District, we’re an independent business which has been defining the art of quality papermaking for six generations.

The paper mill has always been aware of the responsibility it has to manage activities in harmony with the natural environment. It sits alongside the fast-flowing clear waters of the river Kent which has played an integral part in the development of the site on which the mill stands. In the 13th century the site was home to a manorial corn mill and then in the 18th century wool and cotton mills were established which were later adapted for paper production. 1833 marked a milestone for paper-making production, the new Fourdrinier process was used to create paper on the mill site – the basic principles of which are still used on our modern machines today.

James Cropper, great great great grandfather of today’s chairman, took over the mill in 1845 and his descendants have taken an active part in the management of the company ever since. Our company values are similarly long term – whether you are a customer, employee, supplier or shareholder we want to build a long-standing working relationship with you.

The loyalty and skills base we cultivate is accordingly deep and broad. A policy of growth, investment and change over the years has enabled the company to remain pre-eminent in its field - providing a continually increasing range of customised paper and board products to a world-wide clientele.
