A watermark is an image or pattern created by compressing the fibres in the paper sheet, the patterned portion of the paper is thinner and so is discernible when held up to the light as more light is transmitted through the compressed area. If the pattern is a series of distinct parallel lines, the paper is termed a Laid paper.
